I believe the NZ officer is similar to the Australian officer in that there is a weapon in the vehicle but it’s up to the officer whether they choose to carry it on their person or not as New Zealand Officers are not routinely armed just like the U.K.
The weapon is usually a Clock 17.

That’s an old photo: nowadays there’s a Glock and usually a Bushmaster kept in a gun safe in the trunk, plus he’d be wearing a Taser. It’s the officer’s discretion when to carry, however they need to notify their superior before doing so, and only for a single incident. The only cops who routinely carry are airport police, diplomatic protection, some isolated rural cops, and armed offenders squads (aka SWAT).
Cops here are generally opposed to the idea of p ermanent carry - there’s a belief that if the cops gun up the crims will gun up, and more cops will get hurt. Right now the rate of firearms related crime is very low. Partly because short guns are closely controlled here and therefore very expensive, partly because criminals don’t expect to get into a gun battle and a knife does just as well for threatening a civilian, and partly because they know that an unarmed police force takes gun crime REALLY. FUCKING. SERIOUSLY. Rob someone at knifepoint and you’ll probably get away with it. Rob them at gunpoint and you’ll be hunted down whatever it takes.

We’re not a donut country. Those silver cases are full of chocolate bars though.

A box of chocolate bars sounds like a good thing to keep stocked in case the cop runs into a diabetic suffering from hypoglycemia.
A donut shop near my house has “baseball” trading cards taped to the walls around the service counter. However, instead of baseball players, the cards feature members of the local police department.

I knew they carried takers but was told the officers chooses whether to carry a weapon on their person or not but are firearms trained and have one in the vehicle should they need it.
I'm happy to be wrong though. You'll know more readily than me.
